Used to play a neutral grip, friends talked me into a strong lt hand. Have been chickenwinging ever since. I couldn’t figure out how to stop the “winging” until I just watched your video. Next trip to the range I will go back to my neutral grip and hope I stop the wing. Thanks

the flip is fine, but the flip has to happen after the ball has been struck, preferably with a forward leaning shaft and shallow angle of attack. this isn’t advocating a flip before impact that adds loft and never gets the center of the face to the ball unless it’s perched up, it’s advocating the way to freewheel and potentially add speed through impact. take a look at fred couples’ hands through impact and then try to convince yourself he is not doing what hawk is saying. you can’t.

  3. craigt611 says:

Notice the comments about flipping. By the time you flip, don’t you feel that the ball is already gone off the face and the actual finish of the release is unimportant? It seems that the important part of your advice is in the compression of the ball toward the target. Am I correct?

  4. hitmanhawky says:

you know 3 different players have won pga events playing cross handed but i dont teach that, so many ways will work i teach what i think is the strongest grip even for the weakest players, natural grip with hands facing palm to palm and palm of right one facing target back of left one facing target, tigers grip by the way, i feel this allows for a free releasing of the clubhead and helps the body stay level through the shot although i may not agree with you all i love you your friend hitmanhawky

  5. hitmanhawky says:

read my post here yes i flip it and glad i do know when and how much to flip it read the answers i give in post previous to this and it says it all on how i feel if you dont agree its ok with me but i back up what i say with basic facts. do you flip the club for a flop shot? a little less flip a little less flop, if you want to flop it flip it you want it low dont flip through the hitting area , so common sense says knowing how and when to flip helps control trajectory and spin …

  6. earthshine2k says:

Hawky, I just looked at your swing in your other video. Why do you advocate that fundamentally ‘unsound’ flip release when you don’t do that in your own golf swing? C’mon, man, don’t just make stuff up to be different. You might FEEL like you flip it through impact, but, you don’t. I’m surprised you’d encourage your students to work on such a destructive (to good golf shots) technique. Just my opinion.

  7. earthshine2k says:

Hitman, I’m sorry, but the best ball strikers in the world, past and present, do NOT have the post impact wrist action you demonstrate / describe. I agree they have an arched left wrist and forward leaning shaft at / through impact, but neither Nicklaus nor Woods, whom you cited as examples, have your look post impact.

  8. hitmanhawky says:

you are axactly right ,maybe i should say what i think is the proper grip, anyway this is a grip i feel is the strongest for even the weakness player, because it allows the hands to release naturally. and i feel this grip will be more consistent in ball striking then any other ive seen, and this is the grip tiger uses and jack used and i use so i know this grip very well, yes many have won with different, steve stricker had a nice artical on this grip last golf digest. hitmanhawky

  9. arniepga says:

anytime someone says the “proper” grip I cringe. besides that events have been won with neutral, strong, weak, interlock, double interlock (Furyk), baseball, overlap, “intermesh” (Norman), crosshanded, and not to mention short fingers, long and the like. Hogan gripped it in the fingerTIPS, Nicklaus in the fingers, and others in the palm. That being said, if you look at how a swordsman grips a weapon, you will find true strength, leverage and accuracy. Good presentation though.

  10. angusdodds says:

    wow your good

  11. hitmanhawky says:

it could be called uncocking the club instead of flipping i uncock it , i load my wrist angle and when i uncok it looks and is a flipping of the clubhead , body must turn arms arms must move hands working together and well timed it can produce solid shots. swing should work from ground up.sorry mike if i talked your ear off thanks for the comment ill try to do a video on this to give better understanding of my thoughts thanks buddy hitmanhawky

  12. hitmanhawky says:

yep i flip, the key is when you flip it and how much you flip, controls spin and trajectory, golf clubhead is like a hammer head and if you nail a nail you do better flipping the hammer head down on the nail, want to hit it low dont release the wrist ( supination ) of left wrist through impact , want to hit it high ( pronate the left wrist through impact how much and when determines how high and how much spin, the best to ever play flipped it, video coming to explain better thanks hitmanhawky ty

  13. MikePedersenGolfTips says:

It seems you are promoting a flipping of the hands through impact instead of the body pivot releasing the club. An independent move with the hands and wrists. Is this correct? Obviously there are a hundred ways to hit a golf ball.

Can’t believe the amount of negative comments – Great vid hitmanhawky, I’ll definately use this next time I’m on the range – I have either a terrible slice or a nasty pull :/ Can’t find the PGA Teaching Manual anywhere either..

  21. martinavizcomm says:

Jim, i don’t think iv’e ever seen Tigers right hand go UNDER his left, only his right going OVER the left. This releasing action you mentioned makes the ball go to the right. This (right hand to the sky) move is a slicers/hackers action. Any feedback would be good, thanks. Martin.

  22. MrDent495 says:

Great stuff! Love the book drill, it really shows the squaring up of the club face. Many thanks for this video.

  23. jocotube says:

hi hawk, i really appreciate that you’re sharing this drill/tip about “release”. couple of questions sir, a. what’s the power ratio of left and right hand for each 3 swing motion and the release? is it 90/10 for all?
    b. can this be applied to driver and hybrid clubs as well?
    c. how can i master the “ball bouncing on the club” drill? i think this drill helps to be consistent on hitting the sweet spot. thanks in advance.

  24. maryb460 says:

Thanks for all your great instruction, it’s the best advice I’ve ever gotten. One thing I’m having trouble with is pulling my left arm up at impact and not extending at impact is there a drill you would recommend? Thanks

  25. MarkjeBOSS says:

hey I have sent a video message to you. In the vid i’m the blue dude. I was wondering why my shots have the tendancy to hook sometimes, Im sure it’s hook and not draw tho. Also how can I make my shots more consistent at this time I shoot (on average) 10 yards left or right of the target I have. Length is not a problem for me, it’s mostly the aim or hooking the shot. I don’t have any other problems. I hope you can help, thanks!

  26. FaceOfGod2 says:

@Pomme843 You aren’t aware of any conspiracy theories that turned out to be very real? The first one that comes to mind right now is appropriate as it’s now even in MSM. 4 years ago if you spoke of a group of powerful elitists who meet to make geopolitical decisions that effect us all, without our knowledge or vote (who go by the name “Bilderburg”) you might be told to remove your tin foil hat.

  30. Wilkinsburg1960 says:

Per Joel: They will resurface after the Nuclear Holocaust and ‘Join Forces with Europe”. Ok, but HOW are we in ANY position to ‘choose our Allies of Europe’? Wouldn’t China/Russia then ‘Claim’ the spoils of war’, namely America? Joel HAS good points but as I await his book, I’ll have to find such answers within it or I’ll reevaluate his Theory of a ‘Nuclear War’ to a much lower probability.

  31. Wilkinsburg1960 says:

I’m a Conspiracy Theorist against my will. That is WHAT the Gov. has done is so provocative that it forces me to start asking questions. After all I LIVE here. Both Parties have been compromised along with our educational system-Media and if we get Paul elected he’d not survive. I don’t see a ‘way out’. Like the Borg, ‘Resistance is futile’ yet we MUST RESIST if only to delay the inevitable. I only see resist and ‘prepare’ for the SHTF but not ‘Win’. It’ll take an ‘ActofGod’ for us to survive.

  32. Wilkinsburg1960 says:

Assured-mutual destruction has been our ‘salvation’ since 45. Iran is reported to WANT it for Religious reasons (who really knows since we know only what we’re told?). Ok, (let’s say) the “Elites” in the ‘West’ want it to start the NWO. Then what about China and Russia? Are they part of the Elites also? This question needs answered. Then Joel says “uncover the Conspiracy” OK but then what? I believe that ‘they’ have is all sown-up already. What’s our end recourse? Neclear war = Agenda 21 only.

  33. Wilkinsburg1960 says:

I’ve never seen any Administration “play” their hand like this one. The build-up near Syria is alarming and even reckless at best. Russia has basically said: “Touch Syria; touch Russia!” Along with the clock ticking-down on Iran what can we expect? Therefore independently Joel’s theory on ‘provoking’ China into a Preemptive Nuclear Strike against us follows our actions. Yet, JFK once said it all: “Victory in a Nuclear War is only ashes in our mouth”. WHAT do they think they will find after?

we need to start working our ppl into office. from the ground floor and up. county, state levels, ppl we can trust and ppl that wont sell out. They need to be quite untill its time for the political attack to gain our country back ! our ppl on the inside. its never too late !!!

You are assuming that I’m going to roll over and die, LOL! Not! God didn’t build me that way. I am saying though, that just like Shadrack, Meshek and Abednigo, they went into the fire, God was with them. If I’m where God wants me to be, He will be there too.

  37. moonangel67 says:

If our country is so controlled why would moving to another country that is controlled the same even be an option? There are other countried that don’t have as many laws as we do like not be able to buy whole milk, forced immunization, the threats of chips being placed in your body, and here we have the EPA, FDA, CIA, homeland security, Fema, FBI, and immigration neutralization, so you don’t think it isn’t communist here now. Think again.

  40. SKERLOK says:

this may be the wrong place for this, but anyways here goes—tangy tangerine is not a natural product. They hyphenate the all-natural which allows them to give the impression that the contents are natural. Ascorbic acid is synthetic vitamins c, looking at that alone tells me how fake this product is. I didnt bother to look and see what other synthetic vitimins they include, one is enough.

or he may want you to try and preserve your life to the best of your ability… instead of letting yourself die and thinking in the process that it must be Gods will… I think God wants us to do a little of the work ourselves… yes He can do anything, but He often does it through us… so go roll over and die and call it Gods will if you like… the smart man will try to preserve life in an effort to help God fulfill His plans

  47. KuatoChewbacca2012 says:

LOL!!! I totally get where you’re coming from on this one. Look, man, you don’t do the right thing because you’re going to get something for it. You do the right thing because it’s the right thing. That’s it. It’s really pretty simple but for some reason they teach us to forget it and replace it with “do the right thing when it’s convenient, when it doesn’t cost you or when it pays off.” It all reduces to a choice: The world or your own soul.

  48. KuatoChewbacca2012 says:

I may or may not get a gun. I’m not sure there’s anything in this world that’s so important that I’m prepared to stain my soul for it by killing someone. Mainly, what I’m talking about is being a good neighbor instead of a dick. If that way of thinking is abrasive to you, you may need to talk to someone about some deeper issues.

  49. KuatoChewbacca2012 says:

You completely misunderstand me then. And, FYI, this self-absorbed lack of kindness in people is THE main reason why the world we live in is as fucked up as it is.
I’m not talking about taking anything from anyone else (I think this was rather obvious), I’m talking about giving. I plan on being available to help my neighbors when the SHTF, not turning into the Great Humongous like all the other “I’ve got mine, fuck you”-type preppers out there.
