@cmterpsnskins It will definitely help! See “overswing and fast backswing; shawn clement” video as well for some extra help on this; Shawn
I just got myself a medicine ball when I saw you use it in another video on chipping. I must have totally missed this video, but glad I stumbled upon it. I haven’t been able to feel the heavy momentum, and toss/fall concept, so I am hoping this gets me that feeling. Thanks!
@paularagon11 You said it very well! I place a magnetic stem on the face of the club to show how the face stays on the plane of the swing like you say; but as soon as the right arm folds and the wrists hinge, the face flip flops to the leading edge being on plane; I will be doing another video of my takeaway soon and we will be talking about it; BTW; this is not something you should be trying to manipulate in doing; it just happens with a good set up; Shawn
Shawn, you mentioned having the clubface looking like it is shut before the elbow hinge, but it is actually still facing the direction of the swing plane. When the right arm actually folds, I’ve seen most players have the face perpendicular to the plane, and others- more like Dustin Johnson, that have the clubface continue to face the direction of the swing plane. What are your thoughts on how this should actually be?
I’ve got a crush on the secretary in the background.
Thanks for the great comment and realizations!
This drill is for all clubs; chipping and pitching as well!
Longer irons and woods would be more away from the body with the hands and arms but the essence is the same! Shawn
I overlooked this one. A genuine gem,this drill. This drill kills a few dozen flocks of birds with one stone.
- Taut arms;
-Single arm/shoulder unit
-Feeling of being in motion;
The stance with the butt end of the grip/medicine ball very close to the body, is this for the short irons only ?
I use a medicine ball in all my conditioning programs for golfers. But seeing you explain it is helping me with my golf swing
Having the hands even with each other on the takeaway is one I need to work on.
8 to 12 pounds would be good;
Shawn, what weight medicine ball would you suggest? I am a normal sized middle age man.
That’s easy; go to my 3 videos on the subject starting with “Proper Spine Tilt Angle” then to Braced tilt” and Braced tilt part 2″…Then go to the “One Leg Drill” and the “One Leg Drill Back to 2″…All my videos are on my website on the “You Tube Shawn” page…
What videos would you suggest watching to help stop swinging on a different swing plane during the downswing. my problem is i swing over the top which causes a pull.
thanks for all the great videos
Thanks for the comment! Just like 812ekoms said below…to get the jist of how the arms would work with a standard golf grip, go to my “Takeaway and starting the swing” video and you will understand…I am glad you gave me this feedback and I am sure others are trying to figure this out…:)
h1e2x3, I believe the purpose of this drill is for the golfer to feel how the arm unit and body moves together in unison so that hips clear back and through.
It’s a great drill, Shawn. The only incoherent thing is that in a golf grip both inside parts of hands are not parallel (as when you hold the ball) – and it affects how elbow joints are working in the motion.
cheers. i have quite a wide turn into and out of my swing so maybe its not staying behind the ball.
cheers shawn! another great video
It could be; it could also be that your focus is too much on the ball and not on the momentum to the target; it could be that your head is moving forward and not staying tilted behind the ball and finally, it could be that you are sliding in the backswing instead of turning. The corresponding vids to this are: “Through the ball”, “braced Tilt Part 2″, “Leverage Power”, otherwise have a look at my swing analysis services page on my website…:) Shawn
sorry this isnt the best place to post it. but i noticed how when you picked up the club the ball was further foward in your stance than where i put it, and somehow the sound of your club skipping doesnt occur until after you made contact with the ball.i find that if i put the ball just foward of the centre of my stance im making contact with the turf kind of as i hit the ball(or on a good day just after the ball)is this caused by incorrect weight transfer onto my left foot coming into contact??
In the takeaway and starting the swing video, you will see how I talk about the area where the right arm folds; this is where the left hand goes over the right in the backswing; have a look and you will get it!
shawn, i got your dvd and in the section on arm motion you show how the left arm is on top of the right arm in the back swing. But in this video you are showing the right arm above the left. What am i missing?
Shawn that is an AWESOME drill for those of us struggling with spine angle and spinning out! You da man!
